Glossary of Terms and Acronyms

AC – Augmentative Communication

Accommodations – Changing HOW a student is instructed or assessed

ADA -- American Disabilities Act

ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder

ADHD – Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity

AIP – Academic Improvement Plan

ALC – Alternative Learning Center

Alternate Assessment -- based on alternate academic achievement standards. Students with the most significant cognitive disabilities that may prevent them from attaining grade-level achievement standards, even with the best instruction possible.

Annual Review – Yearly meeting with parent, teachers, and other interested parties to review the student’s progress and develop new goals and objectives for the Individual Education Plan. Referred to as an IEP Conference.

ANSI – American National Standards Institute

APD – Agency for Persons with Disabilities

ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder

AT – Assistive Technology

AYP -- Adequate Yearly Progress

BDIS – Behavior Disorder Rating Scale

BIP – Behavior Intervention Plan

BPIE -- Best Practices in Inclusive Education

CAP – Comprehensive Assessment Program

CD – Communications Disorders

CFS -- Children and Family Services

Child Study Team – Two or more professionals assigned

CMS – Children’s Medical Services

Code of Conduct – A guideline developed by The School District of Lee County to insure consistent disciplinary procedures within the district

Competitive Employment – Regular paying jobs paying at least minimum wage, in real work setting, full or part-time

Consultation – A voluntary process in which one professional assists another to address a problem concerning a third party.

Continuum – A sequential list of skills taught in each subject area. Handbooks can be obtained from the school.

Continuum of Services -- The array of service deliveries available to students with disabilities (i.e.: general class, consultation, support facilitation, co-teaching, resource, separate class.)

Co-teaching – A model in which partners share responsibility for planning the program, teaching the lessons, monitoring the progress of students, and making decisions about modifying the program.

Course Code (Directory) – Used to enter student data into the FIRN system. Information regarding exceptionality, class schedule, and time served in ESE program(s) is entered by numerical code.

DD – Developmentally Delayed

Delivery Options – A placement option chosen to meet student needs (e.g. general education class, co-teaching, full-time)

DH – SW Florida Juvenile Detention Home

DOB – Date of birth

DI -- Differentiated Instruction: The provision of classroom instruction that offers different routes to content, activities and products in response to differing learner needs. 

Disability -- An individual difference that may require adaptations to the environment.

DSI – Dual Sensory Impaired

District Strategic Plan -- A detailed blueprint describing long and short-term district goals, strategies, resources required, means of evaluation, timelines and persons responsible.

DOE -- Department of Education

DS -- Developmental Services

DWD -- Dealing with Differences

EHA –Education for all Handicapped Act, PL 94-142.  Guarantees a free, appropriate education in the Least Restrictive Environment for all handicapped, school age children.

ELL -- English Language Learner

ESE Department Head – Designee from each school whose duties include attending monthly meetings and disseminating information for ESE teachers at his /her school.

II - Intensive Intervention

IL - Intensive Language

Inclusion – A philosophy that adheres to educating children with disabilities with children who are not disabled. It provides a means of maximizing opportunities for participation of all individuals in the least restrictive environment. It presupposes the provision of services and supports necessary for all individuals to participate fully in the school community.

InD -- Intellectually Disabled

IR -- Intensive Reading

ITP -- Individual Transition Plan

Job Coach – A person who provides training, intensive support and follow-along for a person with a disability. A job coach or job trainer provides training, advocacy and support services at a gradually decreasing level as long as the person remains employed.

LCCE -- Life Centered Career Education

LEA – Local Education Agency

LEP – Limited English Proficiency

Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) – Students with disabilities must be educated with their non-disabled peers in general education classrooms to the maximum extent possible and in close proximity to the home. Students should have the same equal opportunity to learn and progress academically, socially, and emotionally as they would have if not disabled, these opportunities must be spelled out in the student’s IEP and not left to the assumption or convenience.  The LRE is an important factor in determining the appropriateness of placement and service delivery options.

PLEP – Present Level of Educational Performance – A narrative statement of the student’s strengths and weaknesses within an area of learning.

Procedural Safeguards – Document given to parents by educators whose goal is to help them understands the legal and procedural safeguards pertaining to IDEA. They include 1) Least Restrictive Environment 2) Protection in evaluation 3) due process; and 4) confidentiality.

Program Specialist -- District liaison for specific program service.  (i.e.: Behavior, Inclusion, Transition, etc.)

PT – Physical Therapy

Pupil Progression Plan – booklet developed by Lee County School System, which address is evaluation of each pupil’s achievement in relation to District Performance Standards for each grade level. A copy can be found at each school.

SDM -- Service Delivery Model: The identified service from the Continuum of Services provided to the student, based on IEP goals and objectives with consideration for opportunities for inclusion in general education settings.

SF -- Support Facilitation: A service delivery model from the continuum of services in which both direct and indirect support is provided to students with disabilities and their general education teachers.

SPCH – Speech

SP & P -- Special Programs and Procedures

SRUSS -- School Readiness Uniform Screening System

SS – Standard Score

SST -- Student Study Team

SSW – School Social Worker

Staffing – Meeting held for placement, dismissal, program reassignment, readmission. Final eligibly and placement decision regarding any exceptional education program are determined at this meeting.

Staffing Report -- A written account of determination of eligibility for service in Exceptional Student Education Programs.

Staffing Specialist -- The district liaison assigned to handle ESE staffing and compliance responsibilities.

Strategies – Various teaching methods and techniques used to meet the objectives of the IEP.

TBI – Traumatic Brain Injury

TABE -- Test of Adult Basic Education

TIEP – Transition Individualized Education Program

Transition – Any movement from one phase of life to the next. The transition process for an individual begins during the time a student enters a secondary program at approximately age 14, includes the point of exit or graduation and extends to several years of follow-up to determine appropriate placement in the community has taken place. The intended outcome is that students become more independent and productive members of the community.
