New Round of Family Services Grants!
Recently Autism Speaks announced a call for applications for our fourth round of Family Services Community Grants to promote services that enrich the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Grant proposals are being solicited that address one of the following areas of need: Education, Recreation/Community Activities, Equipment/Supportive Technology and Young Adult and Adult Services. Successful applicants will apply grant funding to support new programs or the expansion of existing projects.

All applications must be submitted online at: http://grants.autismspeaks.org/research/login.asp The due date for applications is June 25, 2009. Funds released to recipients in August 2009.

The Exceptional Student Education Advocacy Committee is open to all – parents, teachers, administrators and community stake holders.  All meetings are held at the Lee County Public Education Center

We’ve had great feedback from our use of the Parent-link phone system to invite you to trainings. Expect a phone call invitation with time, date, and location of trainings. Families Helping Families – A pilot program to provide training to families who express an interest in helping other families in our district.  The training will be comprised of 20 hours of intensive information sessions regarding variety of topics specific to Exceptional Student Education.

Finding the Right Fit to Graduation – A pilot program developed to assist families with knowledge regarding high school options.  The target audience will be for parents or guardians of students experiencing challenges in their current high school situation.  We will provide a variety of options and information to assist with “Finding the Right Fit to Graduation”.

Getting Connected – A panel presentation will provide information to families whose loved ones will require long-term assistance in establishing an independent life after high school.  Representatives from The School District of Lee County, Vocational Rehabilitation, Agency for Person’s with Disabilities, Social Security and Family Members will provide a wide range of meaningful information to get you connected with other agencies.

Seamless Transitions from Pre-K to Kindergarten – District level representatives will provide information to families whose children are transitioning to Kindergarten.  The presenters will explain the evaluation process, school assignments and what services may be available for your child.  Working together as a team will maximize your child’s growth and development.

Wills, Trusts and Guardianship – Planning for a child with special needs involves many specific areas of concern.  This session will provide families with information about, advocacy, financing, guardianship, special needs trusts, and medical considerations.
