Psycho-educational
Evaluation |
|
Diagnostic assessments may be administered to students who
have initially gone through the following processes in an
effort to better access the curriculum:
-
Parent
– Teacher meetings and/or consultations regarding the
child’s status, with recommended supports put in place
in school and/or home
-
Counseling sessions provided by building-based guidance
counselor if applicable
-
Multi-tiered Response to Intervention programming at
which time progress monitoring is carried out to rate
the level of success the student is achieving in
intensive academic reading and/or math
environments--designed to help the teacher clearly
identify the issues and utilize seemingly appropriate
strategies or remediations in the classroom to attempt
to promote educational growth without further referrals
if possible
-
Vision
and Hearing screenings to rule out sensory weaknesses
-
Screening for potential communication issues
(communication checklist)
-
Completion of Evaluation Referral Form including parent
signature giving consent for testing
For those students whose
problems are extremely chronic or severe, a full
psycho-educational battery would be administered, which
includes: |
|
v |
An IQ test to estimate reasoning ability in relation to same age
peers |
|
v |
Achievement tests, primarily in the reading and math areas |
|
v |
Processing measures (motor and memory areas) to gain insight into the student’s probable learning style or potential area of
weakness |
|
|
If there are social/emotional factors, behavior
checklists and/or projective tests come into play, as well. |
|
It is our responsibility as school professionals
to attempt to resolve a student’s difficulties
within the confines of the general education
environment whenever possible (as delineated in
IDEA regulations). This is known as the least restrictive environment. |
